Rent estimator

This compares about 30 percent of the monthly income you type with HUD’s rent figure for a county or a ZIP. The housing authority calculates the real tenant share from adjusted income.

Thirty percent of monthly income is a rough guide from the voucher program’s family-share rule, 24 CFR 982.515. Deductions that make adjusted income are in 24 CFR 5.611. If the landlord’s rent is above the payment standard, the household pays the extra. The payment standard is the authority’s figure, explained on the payment standards page. Connecticut counties often use a different code than the one on a housing authority record. A ZIP lookup still works when HUD published a Small Area rent.
